Syed Abul Maqsood (23 October 1946–23 February 2021[1]was a Bangladeshi journalist,columnist, researcher, essayist and writer. He is well known for his research essays. He regularly wrote columns in the first light daily. His articles give a clear idea of the politics, society, literature and culture of the country. He has written research articles on biographies and works of famous writers and politicians. He has also practiced poetry as well. The number of books he wrote is over forty. The Journal of Germany is a travelogue written by him. He received the Bangla Academy Award in 1995 for his overall contribution to Bengali literature.
Early life
Syed Abul Maqsood was born on October 23, 1946 in Elachipur village of Shivalaya upazila in Manikganj district of the Bengal Presidency of British India (now Bangladesh). His father Syed Abul Mahmood and mother Saleha Begum. Two years after her birth, on November 20, 1948, her mother died of a bow scar while giving birth. After the death of his mother, his mother Begum Rokeya Akhtar brought her up with child affection. He also died in 1980. His father used to practice poetry. So from childhood he got the opportunity to read various foreign magazines in the country. His father used to keep Anandabazar Patrika, The Statesman and Ittehad in Kolkata and later daily Azad, Dainik Ittefaq and Morning News magazine in Dhaka.

Education
Abul Maqsood’s education was handpicked by his barber Loknath Sheel. He used to give him lessons in ‘caste’ and ‘idealism’. He then read to their doctor Nibaran Chandra Saha Poddar. He taught him three or four days a week. He joined Jhitka Anandmohan High School in the sixth grade. He later studied at Dhaka University.

Career
His career began in 1964 with journalism in the weekly Navayuga, edited by M. Anisuzzaman. It was the mouthpiece of the Pakistan Socialist Party. He later worked in the National Awami Party-backed weekly Janata for a few days. He later joined the Bangladesh Messaging Agency in 1971. He quit his job as editorial department of the messaging company on March 2, 2008. [3] He was later a regular columnist for the daily Prothom Alo. In this daily, he used to write columns on society, politics, literary culture under the titles ‘Sahajiya Kadcha’ and ‘Bagha Tamarind’.

Literary life
Syed Abul Maqsood’s literary practice started in the sixties with poems, stories and essays. Then he used to write in various newspapers. In 1981, his poetry book was published in the afternoon. In 1987, his second poem, Dara Shikoh, and other poems were published. He has written poems on human rights, environment, society and love. He is one of the classic researchers of Bengali literature. He has studied the biographies and works of eminent writers and politicians like Rabindranath Tagore, Buddhadev Bose, Syed Waliullah, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi,Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Vasani etc. [5] Abdul Hamid Khan writes about Vasani Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani’s life, activities, politics and philosophy (1986) and Vasani story (2013). In the Vasani story, he describes Vasani’s diverse and eventful long life and his political philosophy. [6] Syed Waliullah has been written about the life and literature of Syed Waliullah (2011) and in memory of Waliullah (2014). In Syed Waliullah’s life and literature, he writes about the life of Syed Waliullah and his literary work. He also highlighted the social, political, cultural and economic aspects of the time. In the book Waliullah in memory, he knew him and collected various material from people he knew. He visited UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France and in Pakistan to collect information.

Family Life
Abul Maqsood’s wife was a student of the history department of Dhaka University. He has taught in leading schools and colleges for some time. They have two children. Daughter Jihan is working in a bank with honours and masters in economics from Dhaka University. Son Naseef has studied honors and masters in English literature from Dhaka University for two years at East West University and State University. He later served as senior principal officer at Eastern Bank Limited with an MBA from IBA, Dhaka University.

Death
Syed Abul Maqsood died on tuesday afternoon, February 23, 2021, on his way to the hospital after falling ill. Square Hospital emergency residential medical officer Faisal Haque said Syed Abul Maqsood was brought dead to the hospital. However, he was declared dead at 7.9pm on Tuesday after necessary tests to be confirmed. He was 75 years old.
